Now that's the most satisfying part of the game for me-having things running like clockwork at the macro level, and looking good at the micro level.
I didn't spend enough time closer to ground level, managing how things look in detail. Now I generally zone in building or block sized areas, working in paths, fencing, trees etc before moving on. 
I would also just zone out entire areas after laying some roads down, giving no thought to how vehicles entering/leaving the buildings would slow down traffic.Before using TM:PE and MoveIt I had no idea about nodes and how they affect traffic's ability to change lanes-honestly I must never have watched very carefully in the early days.
My early cities were very much car-oriented.
Your cims will walk or cycle great distances if you give them the means. Further to this, having too many cross-connections between parts of the city for trucks to abuse instead of encouraging the use of highways. Trying to solve traffic problems just by tinkering with the bottleneck (more lanes, a fancier interchange) rather than investigating the root cause of why so much traffic wants to go through that one spot. I'm returning to the game after a few years away and I have no idea how I played before without carefully managing budgets for services. Overspending on services, overspending on public transport (the classic 27 buses serving 103 people situation). Have suggestions for the sidebar / topbar? Mail the mods!
